Chris Christie signed off on legislative measures this year to combat the nation's opioid epidemic and legalize daily fantasy sports games while rejecting an initiative barring employers from asking job applicants about their salary history, as state environmental regulators revised standards affecting companies' soil cleanup costs.

In what attorneys said would generate state revenue and protect consumers, New Jersey officials this year enacted a bill to legalize daily fantasy sports games like those run by FanDuel Inc. and DraftKings Inc.
The legislation clarifies that fantasy sports operators can operate within the state as long as they abide by the new regulations, "whereas before, even though it appeared as if it was going to be something that would fit under a lawful activity, it wasn't clear," according to Stephen D. Schrier of Blank Rome LLP.
"It basically opens up the territory, so to speak, for fantasy sports operators ... to operate in New Jersey and know what the rules are and know how they have to operate," said Schrier, co-chair of the firm's gaming practice and chair of the firm's sports practice.
Schrier said the bill benefits the operators to know "what the boundaries are and that New Jersey has considered this a lawful activity."
