Alan M. Freeman

Biography

Alan Freeman is a trusted strategic adviser and legal advocate who helps clients achieve their business objectives while minimizing legal risk. Equally comfortable in courtrooms and boardrooms, he advises and represents clients in a wide range of industries, including healthcare, hospitality, entertainment, gaming, retail, real estate, and maritime. Alan is particularly adept in managing disputes with public sensitivity.

Alan’s counseling and litigation practice is national in scope, and it includes:

  • Contract negotiation and business dispute resolution
  • Corporate governance counseling and dispute resolution
  • Trade secret protection and litigation
  • Internal and public investigations arising under anti-fraud regulatory schemes
  • Public fraud and abuse litigation, including "whistleblower" claims
  • Admiralty claims and regulatory disputes

Due to the depth and breadth of his practice, Alan functions as outside general counsel to a range of clients.

Alan is a former law clerk to the Honorable John A. Terry of the District of Columbia Court of Appeals.

Outside the Firm

Alan is a leader in the Jewish community of Greater Washington. Since 2007, he has served on the Board of Governors of Charles E. Smith Life Communities (“CESLC”), a nonprofit senior living organization that includes independent and assisted living, the Hebrew Home of Greater Washington, a post-acute care center, and temporary shelter for victims of elder abuse. He was Chair of the Board of Governors from 2017 to 2019, and he served as President of the organization’s Housing Boards from 2009 to 2015.

Alan is a leader in Columbia University’s alumni community, where he served on the Columbia College Alumni Association Board of Directors from 2004 to 2023, and was a member of its Executive Committee from 2017 to 2021. He served as Chair of Columbia’s Alumni Representative Committee in Washington, D.C., from 2005 to 2023.

Alan is active in civic affairs of Montgomery County, Maryland, where he has served on the Western Montgomery County Citizens Advisory Board and several citizen advisory boards convened by the Montgomery County Department of Police.

Experience

Alan’s counseling and litigation practice has included a range of engagements, including:

  • serving as outside general counsel for a privately held clinical research organization, providing corporate legal and strategic counsel;
  • serving as outside general counsel for a national professional services firm, providing corporate legal and dispute resolution services;
  • serving as outside general counsel for a national membership organization, providing corporate legal and dispute resolution services;
  • serving as litigation counsel in trade secret protection litigation on behalf of international pharmaceutical and contract development and manufacturing organization (“CDMO”) companies;
  • serving as co-lead counsel in healthcare and other government contract fraud investigations and lawsuits arising under the False Claims Act;
  • serving as co-lead counsel for national entertainment and hospitality companies on matters of operational risk management (e.g., liquor law compliance, guest interactions/detentions, crowd control), dispute resolution, and local government and community relations;
  • serving as co-lead counsel for an international engineering and construction company, in private-party litigation arising from the performance of U.S. government contracts in the United States and abroad;
  • serving as lead counsel for regional and national real estate owners and developers in the resolution of disputes with joint venture partners and tenants;
  • serving as co-lead counsel for a national retailer, in defense of class-action discrimination claims brought on behalf of customers; and
  • serving as litigation counsel for maritime industry operators in a range of commercial and admiralty disputes.

Professional Activities

Alan has served since 2005 as a member of the Supreme Court of Maryland’s Character Committee for the Fourth Appellate Circuit. The Committee conducts investigations, interviews, and, when necessary, hearings into the character and fitness of applicants to the Bar of Maryland.
