Matthew M. Maher concentrates his practice on complex state and federal litigation, with a particular focus on consumer finance matters, creditor’s rights, and class action litigation. As a member of the consumer financial services team, Mr. Maher works on a variety of consumer finance litigation matters, including disputes under TILA, RESPA, FCRA, ECOA and FDCPA, state law UDAP claims, and a variety of common law claims. He works closely with clients to achieve optimum economical results as efficiently as possible.
Prior to joining Blank Rome, Mr. Maher spent several years at a large, prominent Philadelphia law firm where he concentrated his practice on commercial litigation matters, including breach of fiduciary duty, breach of contract, tortious interference, professional malpractice, RICO, and other torts claims, as we well as collection claims, and claims arising out of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. He has represented national banks, institutional trustees, commercial real estate brokers and developers, and pharmaceutical companies, as well as small business owners, laws firms, and independent contractors.
During law school, Mr. Maher served as the executive editor of the Rutgers Journal of Law and Urban Policy and as a legal writing teaching assistant. He was awarded the Best Brief and Best Oralist awards in moot court, and previously served as a judicial intern to the Honorable Charles B. Smith, Chief Magistrate Judge of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania.
- Represented a national home mortgage servicer in a class action litigation concerning issues of first impression under the FDCPA and RESPA in the federal court in Philadelphia, PA.
- Represented national home mortgage servicers and financial institutions in FDCPA, RESPA, TILA, and unfair trade practices/consumer fraud litigation.
- Obtained numerous dismissals via summary judgment and motions to dismiss on behalf of lenders and financial institutions in a variety of consumer finance litigation matters arising under TILA, RESPA, FCRA, ECOA and FDCPA, state law unfair competition claims, and a variety of common law claims.
- Successfully represented various financial institutions regarding verdicts/judgments on appeal before the Pennsylvania Superior Court.
COMMUNITY SERVICE & AFFILIATIONS
Through Blank Rome LLP’s pro bono initiative, Mr. Maher actively represents a variety of clients, including senior citizens through the SeniorLAW Center Advanced Planning legal clinic. He has also represented clients through the Eastern District of Pennsylvania’s Prisoner’s Rights Panel, Philadelphia’s Homeless Advocacy Project, and the State of New Jersey’s division of domestic violence.
