Elaine Metlin focuses her civil practice on complex antitrust litigation involving international cartels, class actions, international law, broker misconduct, and complex commercial litigation. Ms. Metlin also handles white collar criminal defense, conducts internal investigations, and defends individuals and businesses who have been investigated by the executive branch, Congress, and other agencies and regulatory bodies.
Antitrust and International Law
Ms. Metlin has substantial experience in litigating global antitrust cartel cases, many of which involve international discovery issues and complex litigation questions as well as issues of substantive antitrust law.
White Collar Criminal Defense
For more than 25 years, Ms. Metlin has represented businesses and individuals who have been investigated by the Department of Justice, Congress, various independent counsels, and other regulatory authorities. She is also experienced in conducting internal corporate investigations. She has advised and defended elected and appointed government officials, including members of the Senate and the Cabinet, in connection with numerous high-profile investigations and cases.
Ms. Metlin has represented companies involved in all manner of commercial disputes, including claims of RICO, fraud, breach of contract, and various business torts. She also currently represents a major multinational pharmaceutical company in a significant insurance coverage case. She also has a considerable background in the area of insurance broker misconduct.
Ms. Metlin clerked for Judge Susan Black, now on the Eleventh Circuit, and other judges in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida from 1983 to 1984.
COMMUNITY SERVICE & AFFILIATIONS
In 2010, Ms. Metlin was elected to the board of the Washington Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights and Urban Affairs, where she now serves as a trustee. She currently serves as co-chair of the Resource Board of the National Association of Women Judges. She is a member of the Edward Bennett Williams Inn of Court, the Lawyers’ Club of Washington, the DC Women’s Bar Association, and the National Association of Women Lawyers.
Ms. Metlin is a founding member of the DC Chapter of WLMA (the Women’s Leadership and Mentoring Alliance), a nonprofit whose mission is to cultivate networking, mentoring, and career development opportunities for women, while encouraging seasoned women professionals to build alliances with younger women professionals as the younger women develop their networking and leadership skills.
